What disquiets me about photographing people is the fearsome stillness into which they are forced. "Shooting" is aggressive. The subjects are constrained by an alien point of view and required to speak of themselves in ways they haven't chosen. They are served up like fish-- turned insideout and framed. Photography is a monstrous art and a constant challenge to compassion. The cruelty of it is mitigated only by the fact that every shot is a self-portrait-- revealing more about the photographer than anything else.
